hahahah, mysteryfriend, you're right, i definitely could have included that. even though i was at the game, i forgot about it when i was coming up with this list. let's call it an 'honorable mention'

if memory serves me, that was the same game as the infamous 'Victoria' prank on Gabe Pruitt. http://albeezie.chanclan.org/blog/?category=Pranks That only makes this game even more legendary.

A great list thanks for putting it, both parts, together. As for the question at the end of the post, definitely, go Owls. It's time for a change and I applaud the move, but Ben Braun is a class act and should be remembered fondly by all Old Blues.

I wouldn't be worried about Montgomery. From what I've heard, Stanford AD Bob Bowlsby didn't try very hard to keep Johnson; he wasn't exactly pushed out, but for whatever reason, he was probably made to feel that if he took another job, that might be best for all parties concerned. Certainly it was puzzling that Johnson still didn't have a contract extension beyond the next year.

Montgomery had to know all of this when he took the Cal job. Not only is he friends with Johnson, but he was working as an assistant to the Stanford athletic department. He must've known that Johnson might leave, but he chose to take the Cal job anyway; if he really wanted to be back at Stanford, I think he could have waited a bit to see how things played out.

Montgomery's not a Stanford alum; I think when he took the Warriors job, he was ready to move on from the Farm. I remember hearing reports about him being frustrated with continually bumping heads with the Stanford admissions department. He might view the Cal job as a way to further enhance his legacy, not just as a great coach at Stanford, but a great coach in general. In any case, I'm sure he'll have access to all sorts of recruits at Cal that could never have been admitted to Stanford. I think he really wants to be here, and I expect him to stay around.

Not to mention that Monty doesn't want to look like the bad guy, and jilting Cal to hook up with his old job at Stanford would be the ultimate 'asshole' move.

I was there for that epic game against Oregon in 2006. It was on my birthday, so it's a number 1 in my records.

The best part of the night occurred after the game. I knew where a bunch of Oregon bandsmen were staying that night, so I went over and offered them the last of my Coronas as a parting gift. They took the gesture well, apologizing that they cannot accept because they already have too much liquor to finish before their 5 a.m. flight back to Eugene. Gracious losers that they were, they invited me in to join them. For the next two years, we've celebrated with them during the Pac-10 tourney, regardless of who won the game (They beat us in the title game the following year, but we beat fucla, so I think we were the true winners that night.)

Thanks Ben Braun, for promising at least one absolutely amazing game every single year I've been here.
