BREAKING NEWS! BREAKING NEWS!

As of 11:47 AM, sources close to the athletic department report that Braun has been fired.  It will be announced later today.

There arent a lot of details, but that is what we are hearing.  If we hear anything more, we will send it along to you.  Keep your eyes locked here for more information.  Until then, GO BEARS!

Edit:  FoxSports seems to think Braun is out, too.

Edit2:  CBSSportsLine, too.

Edit3:  And the Chron!

This seems like it will be very likely at this point, we just have to wait for the official statement.

Edit4:  Ah, let’s throw Andy Katz into the mix

I certainly hope this is true. Would make my day and everyone else’s.

  2. Here comes Monte

    Comment by '06 — March 26, 2008 @ 11:10 am

  3. Monte would certainly help our guard woes, but I don’t think he has any college eligibility left. Monty, however…

  4. oh please oh please be right! then we must have a candidate in the bag…assume it is Mike M…then, recruit the current players, make sure the LOI’s are still intact…and Watch the Bears ROLL ON!

  5. Jon Wilner, of the Mercury News:

(Quick aside to Cal fans who have asked this question on the Hotline comment boards: Mike Montgomery would not take the job. No chance, no way. Period. End of discussion.)

    Comment by (Not Nasty) Nate — March 26, 2008 @ 11:21 am

  6. Not so fast my friend.

    Wilner no friend of Cal
    Wilner not in the loop.

  7. I’m not big on Montgomery. He had good, not great success at Suckford. I’d like them to go after some big guys like Calipari or Bruce Pearl. Do those guys really love Tennessee that much? Or inquire on Mark Few - I know he’s seemingly untouchable, but who knows. The others I’d prefer are Randy Bennett and Few’s assistant who now coaches San Diego.

    Comment by oaktownmario — March 26, 2008 @ 11:43 am

  8. i cant believe i am backing Monty…but i am. he has gotten stanford to higher heights than cal has been in 50 years.

that’s a good start. he knows the bay, has a packed roster, and is a pac10 pundit….

there are better coaches out there. but this is a major major upgrade for us.

    Comment by calfanz — March 26, 2008 @ 11:48 am

  9. Mike Montgomery would IMMEDIATELY fill seats and restore confidence among season tix holders. Given how we have a lots of bigs and Monty’s proven ability to help offensive post players - this would be a HUGE deal. It immediately puts us in the mix for the nation’s best recruits.

    Comment by Socaltownie — March 26, 2008 @ 11:51 am

  10. HALLALEJUA!!!!!

    Comment by John — March 26, 2008 @ 11:54 am

  11. I don’t dispute that Montgomery would fill seats. But what is his greatest accomplishment? One Final Four appearance in 18 years at Suckford. Are all of you cool with one Final Four appearance in 18 years? I’m not. Ben Braun was an “improvement” over Todd Bozeman and look how that turned out. I think the goal should be to compete with FUCLA not with Stanford. Who can compete with Ben Howland and FUCLA? Maybe it’s unrealistic given FUCLA’s bball tradition, but shouldn’t we aspire to compete with that? I don’t think Montgomery’s good enough to do that, although some of the other names I mentioned have more (unknown) risk.

    Comment by oaktownmario — March 26, 2008 @ 11:57 am

  12. I am impressed.

    Comment by calfanz — March 26, 2008 @ 12:04 pm

  14. IMHO Monty’s teams struggled in the NCAA’s not becuase of poor coaching but because the slow plodders that Monty had to use at the furd inevitably ran into teams that were quicker. Without prep time, those teams are hard to scheme. But you can not argue with his conference record and ability to compete with Zona and UCLA. Realistically, that would be a huge upgrade since Lute is a lock (and probably Howland as well) for the hall of fame.

    Comment by Socaltownie — March 26, 2008 @ 12:05 pm

  15. Socal,

What I hear you saying is that Montg would recruit better at Cal and thus have better athletes to compete with in the tourney. I’m not sure I buy that. He did have quite a few NBA players go through the furd, although he also had way too many slow white guys. I’m just not convinced we should look at “improving” on Ben Braun b/c frankly that’s not difficult to do. We should keep our sights higher than that and I’m just not sold on Montg but you all may be right. At least make the call to Mark Few. In any case, at least, if true, we’ll have a new coach.

    Comment by oaktownmario — March 26, 2008 @ 12:12 pm

  16. I would completely agree that Mark Few should get a call but I just can’t see him coming to Cal. Lets say you are the coach at Gonzaga. Your cell and your phone ring at the same time. One call is from Sandy. The other is offering you the job at Indiana. If Few is actually interested in moving to a major I am afriad that there are a number of jobs that are better for a coach who really wants to get to the final four. What I DON’T want is for Cal to make offers to 4-5 candidates only to be turned down. THAT would be a major problem. And the problem is that Monty probably says “screw it” to be considered after 3-4 other candidates. Learn how to spell Bennet cause that is who we would be left with and frankly I don’t want us to hire a coach who hasn’t shown he can work with kids that are 1-2 years and done - what you need to compete in the top tier of the NCAA.

    Comment by Socaltownie — March 26, 2008 @ 12:18 pm

  17. According to St. Mary’s website, I did spell Bennett correctly. And if everyone took it personally that we were second or third choice, most of us would not work, get married, or go to school. Most.
I agree though that Bennett is largely unproven.

    Comment by oaktownmario — March 26, 2008 @ 12:30 pm

  18. Bad joke about spelling. I should have more correctly said Bears fans will have to learn two n’s and two t’s. The reason why the comparison to jobs and schools and marraige doesn’t work is that Monty is a Hall of fame candidate. MAYBE he gets the call after Few. But not really after anyone else _IF_ you want him. Recruiting him is like a CEO headhunter effort - you just have to respect the track record and understand that you are not putting him through a the standard line up. Think about it - would Roy Williams have made the move if NC had called Few and Monty and a couple of others before? No, he would only have made the move if he was the tarheels first choice. I put Monty in precisely the same category. But you know what - this is a glorious day for Cal and I refuse to get into a flame war. Peace and time out.

  19. It’d be funny if all these news organizations are using this blog as a source and Braun hasn’t been fired after all. Not that you guys aren’t reliable.
