Bubble Watch 2008
"Is Cal In or Out?"
Well, ok, so there we go. The regular season has ended for Cal men’s basketball. Certainly, not the way we really wanted. But we put that game behind us and now we play the waiting game.
We now shift our focus from the regular season to the post-season. This is always the most nerve-wracking time of the year. Selection Sunday! It’s just a few days away. If the team is anything like me, Ryan Anderson can barely sleep and Jerome Randle is a bundle of nerves.
All a bunch of nervous nellies!

"I grow a mustache when I’m nervous!"
Will we make it? If so, what seed will we be? Well, let’s take a closer look at Cal’s resume to see if we can answer these questions.
What are Cal’s key wins? Key wins are those wins that help get Cal into the NCAA Tournament. Let’s see we got Wazzu and Mizzu and USC. Good stuff, good stuff.
Ok and then what are Cal’s key losses? Key losses are those losses that could potentially keep Cal from getting into the Tourney. Hmm, ok, we have Kansas State and Utah and UCLA and Oregon and ASU and Arizona and Stanford and Oregon (again). Oh and we also have Arizona (again) and Stanford (again) and Wazzu and UDub and USC and UCLA (again) and UCLA (for the 3rd time).
Hmmm, it is definitely going to be a tough decision for the Selection Committee this year. In or out, in or out. To figure it out further let’s look at Cal’s RPI. It is .5437. To put it into context, we are right behind the University of Maryland Baltimore County Retrievers (Go Fighting Lassies!) and Portland State (Go Fighting Jerry Glanvilles!. According to Joe Lunardi at ESPN, both UMBC and Portland State are in the tournament. That bodes pretty well for us.
So, what do you think is going to happen? Will we make it? What seed do you think Cal can gather? If we are lucky, we’ll make the Tourney and meet up with UCLA again. Then, we might be able to figure out which team is the better team. Maybe.
Man, I can’t wait until Sunday. I bet I’ll be up all Saturday night! I’M SO NERVOUS!!!
And don’t forget to sign up for the CGB Bracket Challenge. More information at the bottom of this post.
