In light of the disastrous showing put forth by our men’s basketball team and the disappointing women’s game Monday, it’s time to bring you some more…disappointing news! From Ted Miller’s Pac-10 Roundup:
California is out two defensive backs before spring practices begin after junior Robert Peele and sophomore Brandon Jones both left the program. Peele was expected to compete for a starting job at cornerback last fall but he lost out, sprained his ankle against Oregon and never played again. Jones was contributor on special teams in 2007 with considerable athletic upside.
While the Bears have only one vacancy in the secondary following the departure of free safety Thomas DeCoud, there’s a decided lack of depth, meaning a couple of freshmen might win playing time. As for replacing DeCoud, senior Bernard Hicks tops the spring depth chart.
I honestly don’t remember much about Robert Peele, but our own HydroTech has given us this assessment:
Peele didn’t have a good work ethic or attitude. Didn’t seem like he was willing to fight for the starting spot. He always sort of seemed like he felt entitled to play without having to put in the effort.
So perhaps our Bears will be better off without him, though Miller does say that the secondary isn’t very deep anymore.
Incidentally, our Bears’ Pro Day was yeterday. We made a late, aborted attempt to get out there and witness the spectacle of grown men observing other grown men running in shorts and getting timed, but weren’t able to make it. If anyone who was there can provide us with a scoop, that would be much appreciated.
