Third Time Sucks
We. Got. Killed.
You start questioning your life a little when you find yourself in San Jose at 9:30 on a Monday night, losing by 30 to Stanford. This is not a situation you ever want to experience. "Brutal" asserted itself as the prevalent buzzword in our group. It was so bad that a San Jose State grad/bandwagon Stanford fan sitting a few rows behind me was scoring hits on me (though it was fun to chew him out for taking the side of the rich, arrogant, favored school. If this was a Disney movie, we would have won at the buzzer. In real life, you cut the deficit to 21 at the buzzer).
Wiggins outscored the entire Cal team for most of the game. Cal finally caught up to her when she went out of the game with 5 minutes left. She is, uh, good. With her departure, I think Cal and Stanford split next year. The two teams are pretty even if you take her out of the equation. Add her in, and you get a season sweep with a 30 point exclamation point on an unbelievable career.
One of my comrades at the game still thinks Cal will get a 3 seed in the tourney. My guess is that they bump Cal down to a 4, because it’s hard to ignore last nights game, the record in the last 6 games (3-3), and the record against top 10 teams (0-5). Maybe the selection take the entire season into consideration and pairs Cal with a weak 5 seed. If so, or if we come up with a 3 seed, I would bet on Cal making their first ever Sweet 16. Progress beyond that will be tough, but a Sweet 16 appearance should count as a successful year.
Reader RR summed up last night pretty perfectly:
:(
Oy. Go Bears.

As J. Walter Weatherman once said, “And that’s why you don’t follow women’s sports.”

I think we killed him when we left the women’s game on with the air conditioner running

I said they were a projected 3 BEFORE that game. I agree they drop, just not to a 5. Oh, but darn those Bears. They crack just like my resolve does when a young hottie with glasses, an earring, and a hankering for cheese crosses my path. Go Bears!
