Theo To Blueshirt
Theo Robertson will not return to the court for Cal this year, instead taking a medical blueshirt year. Apparently, recovery from off-season hip surgery wasn’t going as rapidly as hoped, and Robertson, only at about 80% strength, wasn’t going to be able to play more than a game a week for the rest of the year.
I think this was the right decision. You hate to waste a year of a guy’s eligibility for maybe 15 minutes of game time a week, even if he is possibly the best defender on the team. While Theo would definitely be a useful addition to this year’s edition of Cal Basketball, the guys playing in his place are a) not awful, and b) gaining valuable experience. Hopefully, he comes back next year at full strength and kicks some butt.
What’s interesting about this move is that it leaves next year’s team with no seniors. Robertson, Nikola Knezevic, and Jordan Wilkes will all be 4th years in school, but all have now lost a year due to injury. With the recent transfers in of Jamal Boykin and Nican Robinson, if Ryan Anderson doesn’t leave for the NBA early (unlikely), we could be looking at a 9-member senior class in 2009-10. Crazy.

In other news, still no word on DeSean Jackson’s decision. According to Okanes, he’s expected to announce his decision in a conference call with reporters today at 1pm. Personally, despite all the waiting on what was assumed to be a sure-thing decision, I will still be very surprised if he comes back, and am definitely not getting my hopes up. Cal football has already crushed them all too efficiently this past season anyway.
(Edit by TnH: Word is coming in from GreyBear at Scout that DJ is going to enter the draft. Expected, really. Oh well. Good luck to DeSean in the NFL!)
