True Blue Parents
Despite the disappointment and adversity the team has faced this year, my Cal fan parents of 6 years are now hooked on Cal Football (my parents started going to Cal games when I attended Cal).
Last night as I watched the game, soaked to the bone, and cold, I wondered if my parents on the other side of the stadium were still watching. They had told me prior to the game that they were bringing ponchos and all sorts of crazy rain gear but I still wasn’t exactly sure if they’d stick it out until the end, especially when they have a 1.5 hour drive home (and in the rain).
Lo and behold, they stuck it out in the rain!
Here’s an little excerpt of an email my mom sent me:
Yes, we are die hard fans and stayed till the bitter end. Dad wants to buy tickets for next year. He has not given up and still wants to go to a Rose Bowl. So here we go again … Guess we’re true blue fans now.
That little bit right there made me crack a smile and be proud of my parents. Don’tcha love it when you turn your friends into Cal fans? Isn’t it even better when your family becomes Cal fans too?
I suppose the most "romantic" part is that my dad also surprised my mom with a weekend birthday trip to Seattle next week for the away game at U-Dub.
I guess that’s when you really know you’re a True Blue Cal Football fan, when you start to arrange your life outside of football around Cal Football and start to incorporate Cal Football into your life outside of football.

When I first met my now husband, he was fresh from England. When the relationship looked to be getting more serious, I told him that Cal Football now had to be part of his life. He poo-poo’d American Football. Rugby, he said, was a real man’s sport. But somehow I managed to ignore it and demanded that he start going to games with me. Flash forward 8 years and damn, if he isn’t telling me virtually everyday that he’s more true blue than me. We schedule our whole lives around Cal Football. We left to visit his family in England the day after TN game and returned home the day before Louisiana Tech game. He owns more Cal clothing than me. We MUST go to at least 2 aways games a year. We never leave the game until all the players have left the field. We sat through the whole USC game, soaked to our underwears. We donate money to Cal Football every year. I am not allowed to schedule any activity that interferes with watching Cal Football on TV for away games. And yes, we are going to whatever bowl game this season ends up in.

Sounds like you’ve done a great job turning your husband into a Cal fan. I guess the next step is to start turning his entire family into Cal fans too!
