Some of you guys can sit around here and circle jerk each other until the cows come home, but to imply that Nate’s injury is what caused him to throw those 2 INTs is pure BS. You’re a realist in your own mind if you support the “2 Ints thrown by Nate is because of his injury” theory.

As a person with friends on the team without going into too much detail, listen to HydroTech. He’s got a very good grasp of what’s going on and is pretty much accurate with most of his thoughts. Those that are in complete disagreement with him have shown me how much you think you know about football.

For the casual fan that doesn’t understand football, Nate’s first INT throw was pretty much a no win situation for him. The sequence of events outlined by HydroTech with the pressure coming from ASU is spot on. Take a sack? The casual fan would be screaming at him for not throwing the ball away. Throw the ball away? The casual fan would be screaming at him for not getting the ball to a wide open Desean. It would have been best if Nate just got rid of the ball or took the sack, but hindsight is 20/20 and you can’t fault the guy for trying to make a play. Sometimes a QB will complete that pass with pressure in their face, sometimes they don’t and the fans will cheer or jeer him for the result.

The second INT is more on Nate, but after getting drilled numerous times by 250+ # guys coming at you on a tender ankle, I doubt very much you’d want to risk stepping in the pocket and getting drilled again for a sack or fumble. Credit the ASU DLineman for making the play.

A quarterback should be judged by more than his TD/INT ratio. Longshore rarely looks off his first read, rarely hits a receiver in stride, and completely disippears against quality secondaries. Sure he had only 2 INT’s but he had plenty of other poor throws and decisions.

Here are Tedford quotes regarding Longshore’s play against ASU (from Okane’s blog):

“Nate brings so much leadership and experience to what’s going on. I watched him very closely. I thought he moved fine in the pocket, but he was taking a lot of hits. They were getting to him and hitting him low and things like that. I think he was hurrying a couple of things there.”

“He was moving fine. Protection is the key, to make sure he can set his feet to throw the ball, to make sure that people aren’t at him all the time. A couple of plays that weren’t his best plays was because of pressure. He can do a better job of stepping up in the pocket as well and utilizing the pocket.”

“He wasn’t any different last week than he was when he was completely healthy. He was moving just fine, working the pocket with his feet just fine.”

Seems pretty evident that JT thinks defensive pressure was affecting Longshore’s game. JT did note that Longshore needs to do a better job of stepping up into the pocket. This is something which was a problem last year too and something I’ve mentioned before in a brief 2008 NFL draft post:

Never said Longshore sucks; he’s fine when the situation is right, but that injury clearly is hindering him. That said, it was a pretty bad performance, considering he tried to force things like he was 100%.

Like I said in the report card: Overthrown deep balls early, underthrown short throws late. I’m pretty sure a rule of thumb in the pocket is throw the ball away if you’re about to get sacked, rather than forcing the throw. Even if the pass protection failed, Longshore made a few crucial mental errors.

Nevertheless, if Nate is healthy, he should be the starter Saturday; barring Ayoob-like ineffectiveness, keep him in. He’s had five good to great performances and two eh ones. And you should really stay away from the Bear Insider after a loss. Not a healthy place to be.

Oh by the way, did anyone just feel that earthquake? Yeah, flucking excellent, 5.6 here in my town of San Jose! This damn well better not derail the AHPC/Stadium renovations more than they already have been. With three straight losses, criticism of the program abound, and now an earthquake? Are you flucking kidding me? I sure hope one of those damn tree sitters feel from their perch!
