The California Golden Blogs Pac-10 Roundtable Discussion: Arizona State

Continuing on through the Pac-10 teams, today’s discussion was on Arizona St.

Ragnarok: Well, the obvious story around Arizona State is the return of DennisErickson to the Pac-10, and whether he can rebuild quarterback Rudy Carpenter’s shattered ego.  I say yes.  While that might not mean the Sun Devils are ready to de-throne the Trojans, it should mean a respectable finish in the middle of the Pac.  There’s no question Erickson can coach (at the college level, at least), so I’ll bet we’re about to find out just how badly former coach Dirk Koetter mismanaged ASU’s talent.

YellowFever: I’m a big fan of Dennis Erickson.  I’m not really sure why, but it’s probably because he coached the Rock on the 1991 national champion Miami Hurricanes.  Beyond that, it’s beyond me.  He seems like the consumate great college coach, mediocre to poor NFL coach.  Kinda like Pete Carroll, except he didn’t know when to quit.  As far as his team, he inherits Rudy Carpenter, who probably should have done a lot better than he did last year, and Ryan Torain, who I honestly hadn’t heard of until just recently either.  He put up some good stats - but for a mediocre team, which explains why I hadn’t heard of him until recently.

HydroTech: I’ve been getting pretty high on Dennis Erickson too.  I think he’s going to make them a lot more competitive this year.  Even though Rudy Carpenter is pretty messed up in the head and lacking confidence, I think Erickson will be able to turn things around enough in Carpenter’s head to make him respectable.

Ragnarok: What I think will also help Carpenter’s confidence is a seriously back loaded schedule.  Other than a September matchup with Erickson’s former Pac-10 club, Oregon State, there isn’t a game I’d be really worried about on this schedule until Cal visits on October 27, at which time the team could have sleep walked its way to a 6-1 record and a national ranking.

The real test comes when ASU faces the gauntlet of Cal, at Oregon, at UCLA, and USC — do they fall apart at the first sign of a losing streak?  Does Erickson keep this team disciplined and level-headed through adversity?  His reputation suggests that he’ll be able to, but I honestly don’t know.  And even if he can, will it be enough to win any of those games anyway?

TwistNHook: Good news for ASU!  It appears according to a quick Google search that there are many top prison facilities in the greater Phoenix/Tempe metropolitan area.  That combined with Erickson as the new coach should ensure a quick rise to the top of the Pac10.  It looks like there is a juvenile correctional facility right nearby, too.  So, that means they can really sustain their success this time as compared to his brief tenure at OSU and Idaho (where he left behind a mediocre team and a host of problems).

It was not too long ago that ASU was viewed in the upper echelon of Pac-10 teams.  I remember a few years ago when we defeated them 27-0, I was so amazed.  Not that we had won, but that we had pitched a shutout against their fast paced offense.  Last year, that all fell apart with those really weird early season distractions.  I think Erickson can work to return them to that level of success, but perhaps not in the first year.  Although as Erik noted, they could fall ass backwards into an early national ranking.  And that will only fuel Erickson’s ego as a turn-around artist, which will push him to do the one thing he does better than anybody else.  Abandon everything and move to a better job.

Dennis Erickson, coach of UCLA by mid-October?  Book it!

YellowFever:  My optimism comes down to the belief that Erickson will manage ASU’s returning players better than Koetter did, like Ragnarok mentioned earlier.  It’s not an unreasonable one, I think.  So after taking a bit of a closer look at Arizona State, well, Carpenter really didn’t do as badly as I thought he did.  From the way the team fell apart and everyone blamed it on Carpenter, you’d think he was the second coming of Ryan Leaf, or Joe Ayoob.  Viewed objectively, 2,523 yards, 23 touchdowns and 14 interceptions is hardly a disaster, even with a meager 55.4 percent completion rate.

As for the defense, let’s turn things over to new defensive coordinator David Bray, who said, "I was disappointed overall in terms of the athletes and speed at all positions."  Not a rousing endorsement.

Ragnarok: Ryan Leaf was at least a good college quarterback.  Unlike his brother, who’s stuck backing up a baseball player at Oregon.

You know, I don’t think I’ve ever had a discussion involving both ‘ASU’ and ‘defense’.  Bray’s comment would certainly explain that.  I always thought ASU didn’t play D because Koetter didn’t know or care enough to coach it properly, but I guess this means he didn’t even bother to recruit it, either.
This team could be dangerous in a year or two, but I think we’re safe for this year.

HydroTech: ASU only returns 4 starters or so on defense.  The only way they are going to win games is through the offense.  Anybody like good ol’ western shootouts?

YellowFever: It certainly seems to me that whatever problems on the defensive side of the ball, the Sun Devils should have enough offense to beat truly bad teams, but probably not enough to win shootouts with teams that are relatively more complete on both sides of the ball.  That’s why I’ve got them finishing in the middle of the Pac-10 again, right at fifth.

Too Much Max Zhang!

I know we’ve said before that we don’t really care about our men’s basketball team, and, well, that’s because it’s true.  I’m not a fan.  But that might soon change, because how often does your alma mater recruit a 7′3" Chinese guy?

RUN!  IT’S A GIANT ASIAN!

At least Braun has shown he can recruit big guys, even if he has no idea how to develop them once they arrive on campus.  Also, he seems to have quite a proclivity for getting them injured.

"Zhang’s signing also provides insurance, as several Cal post players have incurred significant injuries in recent years, including four different players who had surgery in the last year. In addition to Hardin, they are 7-0 sophomore Jordan Wilkes (knee), 6-10 sophomore Taylor Harrison (knee) and 6-6 junior Theo Robertson (hip). Former big men Leon Powe (knee), Rod Benson (knee) and Sam Rayburn (knee) also missed all or part of seasons since 2004-05."

Now that we’ve figured out who’s to blame for there being far Too Little Rod Benson in the NBA, we also take note of the fact that Francisco Elson is one of only three previous Cal players who were 7-0 or taller, and that he’s only slightly more famous for this.  So sure, we can be happy that our men’s basketball team has a guy that a good 50% of campus can relate to, but does anyone have any idea how he’s going to turn out?

It’s easy to say that the most wildly optimistic result would be him being the next Yao Ming, a relatively good but not spectacular showing could make him the next Wang Zhi-Zhi, near the lower end he can hang out with Sun Ming Ming and beat up Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan, and at worst, well, I’m not so certain that he didn’t come to Cal because he saw how this guy’s love life turned out.  As for me, I’m not going to be fully optimistic about our team until Braun manages to recruit this from China too.
