I definitely agree with an 8 game playoff, or even some other more elaborate form of playoffs. Having a fringe top-8 team be excluded is nothing like leaving out an elite team ranked #3 (see Auburn 2004 as an extreme example), which is what will happen most years under the current BCS system.

And how short sighted is it to think we can't make as much revenue, or more, within a playoff system? This would also change the dynamics and perception of the regular season that could increase revenue. If I'm a fan of #2, I might be interested in checking out at #7.

I agree that Hansen hangs on too much to the Rose Bowl, but Herd is an idiot.

I'm no Hansen fan but Herd kept pushing ridiculous points. As an example, he suggests that the Pac-10 increase to 12 and when Hansen says that the Pac-10 is the only conference to do a full round-robin, Herd responds that it's the only good thing the Pac-10 does. Well I hate to break it to the world, but you can't play a round-robin with 12 teams, so Herd is suggesting we do away with the one good thing, in his own opinion, that we've got. Huh!?! Add in the ridiculous statements about top-15 programs where he's completely unwilling to give the Pac-10 credit because of no tradition of a 2nd top-15 program and then gets on his high horse about a bunch of flash in the pan, did good last year programs. Boise St. and the Big East!?! Outside of last year those teams haven't done squat.

Just so it is clear, I'm for an 8 team playoff even if it minimizes the bowl game matchups. I think a plus-1 is wasting people's time. Without seeding, it's worthless and with seeding, it messes up the bowl games without actually getting to a playoff that actually means something. Also, the 8 team system better well take the conference champions of the current BCS conferences and then 3 at large programs. Finally, I'm also for the Pac-10 getting a much better TV contract, although I think they could solve that by requiring FSN to cover all in-conference games that ABC/ESPN does not, something I think they'd gladly do. I'm no fan of ESPN gameplan, because of the cost. I just want FSN to pick up all the games. (And what was his hogwash about DirecTV? It's not like ESPN gameplan is any different than FSN in principle. They're both available on most networks and take up a bunch of sequential high-numbered channels... Learn to use your remote bozo!)

Hansen is an old wind bag that clearly needs to go. College football is a booming media event with an expanding fan base. The NCAA is simply responding to the demands of those fans and doing it's best to maximize revenue for itself and all institutions involved, given the inertia of the old bowl system..

Believe it or not, there is no conspiracy against the Pac-10. Old traditions die and new ones begin--that is a part of cultural evolution. USC-Michigan last year was touching, sure, but who in their right mind would not have preferred to see USC take it to Florida in the Fiesta bowl?? How about USC-Texas the year before? That was one of the greatest games ever played, but gee, come to think of it, I would prefer to have seen USC in the Rose Bowl against a fringe top-10 Big-10 school. Get real jack-ass, the Pac-10 vs. Big-10 Rose Bowl tradition is over. When the two conferences do happen to meet in Pasadena it will be that much more special, but our conference should be shooting for a national championship every year and the Rose Bowl is merely a consolation prize (i.e. USC last year). Heck, in a seeded plus-one system we will occasionally have both, effectively having our cake and eating it too. Scrumptious!

And on the topic of media exposure and TV coverage, how could pursuing an isolationist policy possibly do anything to improve that situation? Leave the BCS?? Why not join the Canadian Football League while we're at it? The old sap may have ended his career with those comments. He and Jim Harbaugh ought to take their comedy act on the road...
