This has nothing to do with Cal sports, but it’s just a thought that I had while looking about today, from this article on Michael Vick’s dogfighting woes:

On April 25, a search of the house owned by the Atlanta Falcons quarterback and inhabited by his cousin, Davon Boddie, uncovered drug paraphernalia and 66 dogs in the backyard. A search warrant affidavit said some of the dogs were in individual kennels and about 30 were tethered with "heavy logging-type chains" buried in the ground.

The chains allowed the dogs to get close to each other, but not to have contact, one of myriad findings on the property that suggested a dogfighting operation.

Others included a rape stand, used to hold non-receptive dogs in place for mating; an electric treadmill modified to be used by dogs; a "pry bar" used to open the clamped-down mouths of dogs; and a bloodied piece of carpeting the authorities believe was used in dog fights. Carpeting gives dogs traction in a plywood fighting pit.

…except us.  WE care.  We always do.  That’s right, it’s time for the 2007 MLB Draft!  In an effort to make an event where over 98%* (figures may not be entirely accurate, but you get the point) of the players drafted don’t ever actually make the big leagues exciting, ESPN is televising the first round of the draft tomorrow.  Who all is going to be selected in that first round?  Well, no one from Cal.  Though I do have to confess to the sort of malaise that Ragnarok was writing about - I’ve never been to a Cal baseball game in my life, and I bet you haven’t either.  Still, thanks to some intrepid research on the part of Ragnarok in finding an article from the Daily Cal:

Though no Cal baseball player is projected to receive the national face time that comes with the newly-televised first round, it is likely that as many as four Bears starters from the 2007 squad will go in the later rounds, including junior second baseman Josh Satin, junior designated hitter Jordan Karnofsky, senior infielder Brett Munster and junior starting pitcher Alex Rollin.

And who are these players?  Josh Satin was a monster recruit coming to Cal, but was derailed by injury after his freshman campaign and hit only .222 for the year.  The Daily Cal projects him to go in the eighth or ninth round, which isn’t too bad.  Jordan Karnofsky is projected to go anywhere between the seventh and tenth rounds because of nagging injuries - the hitting and power are there, but a lack of a real position recently may hurt his stock.  Brett Munster is a late bloomer who had a mostly nondescript career until his senior year, where he hit .327.  He’s also a great fielder and very smart, but he likely won’t go until the 20th round at the earliest.  And finally, Alex Rollin, well, he had a pretty bad 2006 (7.84 ERA) which may cause him not to go as high as he’d like, and he’s said he may come back for his fourth year of eligibility if he’s not taken in the top 15 rounds.
