To quote Johnny Drama
VICTORYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!
Alright, so the basketball team is in shambles, hippies are running Teford (PBUH) outta town, and rain keeps me from watching baseball. Fair enough. But at least we still rock in rugby! And in these dark days, any modicum of success is to be highly valued.
I don’t know much about rugby and haven’t been to a game since I saw us spank Stanford back at Big Scrum ‘03, 98-0. That was the first time we had faced Stanford after they forfeited to our team out of fear of injuries. Given that we hadn’t beaten Stanford in football in years upon years, much was made of that forfeit. It was bandied about in t-shirt form (Cal Football 0-9; Stanford For-feit) and other various artistic mediums. If I remember correctly, Stanford rugby wasn’t even DivI (and they still might not be), so the only reason we would play them was because of the natural rivalry. Nonetheless, the forfeit was weak. And I think the rugby team wanted to teach them a lesson by completely and totally DESTROYING them in every conceivable fashion.
Mission Accomplished!
I don’t have a really clear photo of the final score, but here is one of us at 91-0.
I might not be able to follow rugby much, but I am able to follow beating Stanford a lot.
So, when Cal rugby beats Stanford 60-0, that sounds pretty good to me. Recap is here. Even though it was 38 points less than in 2003, 60-0 sounds pretty damn good to me! Sure, they still might not even be Division I, but hey its Stanford. Right now, I’ll take it.
I was hoping to go to the British Columbia game, because that is one of the best games of the year, supposedly. But they put it on a Wednesday afternoon smack dab in the middle of the work week.
!
Next week, Army comes to Berkeley on 2.17 at 1 PM. I googled Army Rugby and it appears that they have a pretty sick team, too. So, for rugby enthusiasts (i.e. rugthusiasts) that might not be a game to miss.
Also, mid-march shows some promise. On 3.17, Cal plays Stanford at home. Time to put up 100! Then, on 3.24, Cal plays St. Mary’s. It’s an away game, but Moraga is a 20 minute drive from Berkeley (and I live in Walnut Creek anyway), so that could as easy to get to as a home game. I know even less about St. Mary’s rugby than I do about Cal rugby, but I figure that could be a fun game.
Given how our b-ball team is doing, most Cal fans might view the next 7 months as a fetid wasteland of Cal sports until the Tennessee game rolls around. As little more than time to pray to Tedford (PBUH) for His Unlimited Grace on September 1st, sacrifice a few lambs to prepare our team for Fulmer and Co., and maybe check out the Spring game.
But there is a lot of action going on in other sports like baseball (where we face the National Champion) and rugby (where we ARE the National Champion!).
And where else are you going to see a set up like this:

Go Bears!
