Bears lose 4th tier tournament
When I read this article about 6 months back I wasn’t very excited. I have had many conversations with fellow Cal fans over the past few years, and most of them agree if they were a big high school basketball recruit, they would never go to Cal. Why? We play a boring style. We’re almost never on ESPN. We haven’t advanced to a Sweet 16 in 10 years. Whenever Ben Braun recruits someone remotely athletic enough to run and play an exciting brand of basketball, they decide not to hang around and transfer somewhere (see: Dominic McGuire and Marquise Kately). So let’s just say I wasn’t really surprised when I read we lost our own tournament, the Golden Bear Classic, on Saturday night. Now let me be clear. If our goals in Men’s Basketball are competitiveness, to graduate our players (although I don’t know the graduation rate), and to occasionally make the NCAA’s, then fine. Keep Braun. Enjoy him. But we have a football coach who shoots for the top. In this author’s opinion, it’s time we had a basketball coach who did the same. No more losing to Eastern Michigan and San Diego at home. No more middle of the road Pac-10 team with no hope of ever catching Arizona, UCLA or Washington (remember how quickly UW went from doormat to Pac-10 champ? Right after they hired a new coach?). A new coach might mean winning a Golden Bear Classic against good competition.
