Stanfurd’s New Coach : A Cal Retread?
Heard a couple of rumors regarding candidates for Satnfurd’s next football coach…well, I don’t know if ‘rumor’ is the right word. How about ‘wild speculation’? Yeah, that seems to fit. Interestingly enough, both were regarding former coaches at Cal (and no, they’re not considering hiring Tom Holmoe…).
First, let’s dispense with the ludicrous: a Stanfurd Daily article calling for Steve Mariucci to be the next coach. No rumors here, just a crazy editorial. I can’t imagine how the author deluded himself into believing Mooch would be interested in this job. He wants to coach in the NFL. If he wanted to coach in college, he would have taken the Michigan State job. Also, he’s not that good. He went 6-6 in one year at Cal, then bolted for the NFL. Sounds like a perfect fit.
Now, on to more credible rumors. The Chronicle is reporting that former Cal Offensive Coordinator Al Borges is interested in the job. That name sounds familiar - when was he our OC again? Oh, right, 2001, the year we went 1-10. On the face of it, that alone should disqualify him from ever coaching organized football again. But I think we’re gonna have to blame Tom "Couldn’t coach his way out of a paper bag" Holmoe on this one. Borges has been Auburn’s OC the last 3 years, including 2004, when they went undefeated, and this year, when they were the only team to knock off Florida. Plus, he’s a Bay Area guy who’s trained in the West Coast offense. No head coaching experience, but then, how many experienced candidates are interested in coaching on the Farm, do you think? I’d file this rumor under ‘plausable’.
